so what happens if i don’t live forever? (also how i became an athiest [extremely abridged])

When I was in 7th grade my religion teacher told the class that it was ok to be gay, but that having gay sex was a sin. Tell any 12 year old kid he can’t have sex (well, the kind he wants to have) and you lose ‘em. And Catholicism lost me. But that didn’t mean there was no God, not for sure anyway. I was content, for many years, to think that the church just gets some things wrong, that of course, an ever loving God would never send me to hell for sucking a dick (especially when he’s the one who made me want to do it…)

So I embraced my agnosticism, which by the time I graduated, had turned more into a quasi-spiritual pick and choose belief system when I got into mysticism and spirit guides and healing (note: not heavily into , I was just… browsing), and now my stance is basically… wait and see. But my intuition is that there is no afterlife.

The more ‘atheist’ I became, the more I began to feel free. There was no God watching and judging everything I do. I am the ultimate judge of myself. I am the only person with that power, truly. I once mentioned I was an atheist to a casual acquaintance and he said “…must be lonely sometimes.” I never looked at it that way. The only thing atheism has given me is less guilt, and a feeling of purpose.

I’ve been digging into Transhumanism for a while now, and I’ve become fairly persuaded by the evidence that we are developing technologies that will radically extend our lives (possibly until the end of the universe[or the beginning of the next one]). But lot’s of people like to say that this is nothing more than technologists wishful thinking, their own scientific version of religion, creating heaven on earth, rapture of the nerds some people have called it. And until I see the actual technologies working, on humans, I can’t have 100% confidence that they aren’t wrong. So what happens if I do die?

Well, I was an atheist (well, let’s say… 96% atheist. There’s always a chance the theists are right) before I stumbled upon transhumanism and my stance on death hasn’t changed much. If death is inevitable, then all that means is that this life is more precious. There is no garuntee, or even reason to think, that there is anything after this life. So make each moment count. And don’t worry about dying, because if you do die, you’ll either be starting on some great adventure, or you’ll be nothing, like before you were born.

pope says..

“Science can purify religion from error and superstition; religions can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes. Each can draw the other into a wider world, a world in which both can flourish… Such bridging ministries must be nurtured and encouraged.”
-Pope Joh Paul II

Can’t say I completely agree, but I like this a lot.

dominion over nature

It’s easy to get on the bible’s case for it’s messages that are pro-slavery and anti women’s rights. Also for it’s depiction of a god who asks people to kill their sons, mutilate themselves, and gets so angry that he floods the entire planet with no mercy shown to anyone except Noah. But there are so many more things, subtler things, that also call the bible into question as a guide by which anyone should lead their lives. The one that got me today is that God gave man ‘dominion’ over nature. Obviously, we don’t hold dominion over nature. Look at the earthquake in Haiti. Teaching people that they have dominion over nature is at least arrogant, and definitely very, very dangerous. We are nature, we are connected to and are inseparable from it. We must learn about nature, respect its vastness and power, if we ever want to be able to sustain our society.

29% of Americans say religion ‘out of date’

‘A Gallup poll of Americans’ attitudes towards religion released on Christmas Eve found significant recent increases in those responding either that they have no religious preference, that religion is not very important in their lives, or that they believe religion “is largely old-fashioned or out of date.”

‘Most of these changes have occurred since 2000 and represent the first significant shift since a sharp decline in religious adherence during the 1970s. Over the last nine years, the number with no religious preference has grown from a level of around 8% to 13%. The number for whom religion is not very important has climbed from just over 10% to 19%. And the number who believe religion is out of date and has no answers for today’s problems has jumped from slightly more than 20% to 29%.

‘The biggest difference is that in the late 1990s, up to 68% of Americans though religion had answers to the world’s problems — even though only about 60% said religion was personally very important to them. It seems as though over the last ten years a significant number may have gone from believing that religion is a positive factor in the world, even if they’re not particularly religious themselves, to seeing religion in a far more skeptical or even negative light.

Alright, I admit, the quote from ten days ago was a bit misleading. Jesus was telling a story, not actually telling his followers to kill people. The guy was the hero of his little story though..

Haven’t felt much like writing lately. I’ve been thinking of giving my page an overhaul, but I’m lazy about this kind of shit, so we’ll see what happens. Also, on my last photo album, I said it probably wouldn’t take two month to put together another one… I swear it’ll be less then three.

Some fun stuff for everyone: our bible quote of the day is:
“If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.”

-Exodus 21:20

…wow what a great guy god is…
